  • Compact brown soil in cut 0901, room 38
  • Layer of relatively compact soil (includes two large stones) in the northern part of cut 901 extending under wall 264. The soil was more compact under the large stones but the material was of consistent color, texture and inclusions. At its extent, this layer included no more than 20 square centimeters of soil. The soil lacked a great deal of debris, though the majority of the material was "special."
  • A bit of incertainty about the relative compactness of the soil in some places, but not all, in this layer. I have attributed this to the stones and our stepping on the area while getting in and out of cut 728 but, this could be misguided. So, I treated both slightly compact and more compact soil at the same level as the same material, and same context.

Interpretation

    • This is a fill layer, compacted in some areas from the weight of the stones above (or, perhaps, at one point in time from usage - though this area of material is just too small to be able to tell) and looser in the corners. The material in this area tends to be late Roman in date, though the finds here seem to be later.
