Description
- CH06SR0899
- Brown soil with rubble and many artifacts on E edge of area 3, courtyard
- Loose ashy brown soil, mottled with a very dark gray, containing a large quantity of artifacts, including stone, tile and bones. The approximate extent of the context is 1.3 M (NW-SE) X 1.1 M (NE-SW) and at least 15-20 cm in depth. - Shape is roughly trapezoidal; located along NE (not W) edge of area 3, from photos, roughly between S end of wall fragment and cut 905 - S corner actually seems to cover fill of 905.
- Several smithing hearths recovered and large pieces of bone and artifacts are not articulated (ie nothing is flat-lying or ordered, looks dumped in). 0899 covers a thin layer of brown clayey soil over bedrock (this thin layer was not given a context number).
Interpretation
-
- Disturbed area of soil associated w/smithy activity and/or trash disposal in courtyard; high quantity of residual material, its stratigraphy & small number of 12-13th c. amphora sherds suggest association w/last phases of occupation.
