Description
- Fragment of marble sculpture with Heracles wrestling the Nemean Lion
- Fragment of a sculpture in medium-grained white marble representing Heracles wrestling the Nemean lion. An unsculpted rectangular area on the back of the sculpture and the schematic rendering of the lion's face suggests that the sculpture was carved in high relief above the flat surface of a larger structure. The preserved fragment, heavily abraded on the front side and broken at top and bottom, shows the middle of Heracles' torso from the top of the chest to the middle of the abdomen, and the head of the lion from the top to the end of the mane. Heracles leans away from the lion to the viewer's left; his right arm crosses the middle of his body and disappears under the lion's mane. The pattern of breaks on the surface indicates that the lion's foreleg and paw rested on Heracles' right wrist. The mane of the lion shows use of the drill.
