  • Hard compact soil in NE of room 35
  • The fill in N part of room 35; solid soil, light grayish brown with inclusions of small stones, pieces of charcoal, very small pieces of ceramic, tile, small bones. In the middle of the N wall there is a trace of cement, so it may be the place for a modern post or pole.

Interpretation

    • It seems that the layer is lying on a bedrock which shows a cutting or pits for pithoi. There are two pits near NE wall and one posthole.

    • It is unclear whether this layer represents the last use surface of this room or is the result of gradual silting as the walls of the room fell down and tumbled into the lower area to the SW; the ceramics found in it include a number of fragments of local amphorae of the 13th c., as well as a sherd of Zeuxippos ware and two fragments of GWW IV

    • The precise stratigraphic relationships between this layer and the layers of collapse and fill in the deeper part of the room to the SW were not worked out at the time of excavation. 407 seems to have been covered by wall collapse, but it is not clear if it covered or was covered by roof collapse. Since this layer was very close to the surface at the NE end of the room and had suffered some modern disturbance, it is most likely that it covered 412, which in this case would have been the same layer as 433.
