Description
- CH04SR0049
- Wall along the SE side of corridor between room 30 and room 29
- See context sheet from CH01 for details - but note differing stratigraphic relationships. From CH02 photos and from plan, this wall should probably be split into two separate walls, since there is a pronounced seam in the elevation where the courtyard part of 49 hits the corner of room 29; in addition, the CH02 photos and elevations show that the room 29 portion was built more poorly than the courtyard portion, with only two courses of larger squared quarry stones at the base and more irregular chinked masonry above
- in 2004, noted as being abutted by 50; 2005 and 2006 excavations in the courtyard showed that the two clearly bonded at lower levels, and that the construction trenches for the two were contiguous; wall should probably be divided into two sections, with retaining wall of courtyard abutting wall of room 29 (though almost certainly contemporary construction)
Interpretation
-
- wall constructed during 12th-c reconstruction of block; probably built by masons working on complex 3, given bonds with room 29 walls
