  • CH05SR0512
  • Layer of collapse in room 38
  • Fallen stones of several dimensions (from 4cm to 40cm across) mixed with brownish soil, tiles, pottery, metal; extended across the entire room.
  • The collapse is very clear and well preserved, even though some modern elements were found (probable intrusions). Big stones were concentrated above near the walls, while the center was occupied by smaller stones and tiles. At 1 m from NW wall and 1.60 from SW wall we recorded a little area characterized by little stones and tiles, a large quantity of nails and some modern intrusions (a nail and few little pieces of glass). The coin (2817) was found in a "niche" formed by two stones of 521 next to E corner. [the date of that coin is placed in the 10th c. -- Romanus 1 -- so probably residual: ATR 10/7/06]

Interpretation

    • Collapse of the walls.

    • Although the quantity of stones suggests the collapse of an upper floor at least partially walled in stone, the absence of material from that upper floor in this collapse suggests that it may have gone out of use by the time the building was destroyed
