  • CH06SR0821
  • Muddy layer between and under stone slabs in room 38
  • Layer of brown mud/soil between and underneath the stone and tile slabs around cut 874 in the bottom of the S part of the room. The brown soil is packed around the stones, but also underneath the clay (geological) layer in the cut. This layer produced only a very little bit of ceramic and bone, though much of it was taken for paleobotanical examination.
  • The only doubt I have about this layer is the extent to which we completed the removal of it. The area in the bottom of cut 874 is very wet and it is difficult to see if all of 821 has been removed.

Interpretation

    • This layer appears to be a first attempt to fill cut 874 at the bottom of cut 728. Cut 874 may have been some sort of drain and this soil, along with tiles, rocks and slabs, filled it up and covered it over. (Galina's entire wheel barrel full of mud produced only one small iron object, a little bit of metal and three tiny pieces of ceramic.)
