  • pit/disturbance fill in East corner of room 29
  • Roughly square pit/disturbance in E corner of room 29, straight walls, about 75 cm. X 75 cm.; 45 cm. deep; filled with soil of looser consistency than surrounding [soil], edge marked in several places by vertical tiles or stone
  • Excavators noted a concentration of broken tile in this area in upper layer; perhaps it indicates that feature began higher up and was not recognized at first. Pithos base visible in photo was stolen the night after the photo was taken, before it could be excavated.

Interpretation

    • July 11, 2005: review of records indicates that the cut must also have gone through all layers of collapse, since it extended into floor levels; relationships changed to reflect that conclusion; not clear whether pit caused by root action or (more likely) by human intervention for unknown reasons -- this idea is supported by the massive disturbance of ceramic remains, and the pithos base visible in the photo may have belonged to one of the two pithoi crushed in situ in this room
