  • Lower floor surface, below 636
  • Compact floor surface, overlying the bedrock in Room 33. Inclusions include hearth features, tile, ceramics, bone, glass; medium brown soil with ashy patches, charcoal, smooth slighltly greasy in places.
  • Floor surface dierctly overlay bedrock. Some floral turbation visible (roots) in the S. E corner of the bedrock cut 731, between surface and bedrock. Material identified in field as 9-10th c. by LS and ATR.

Interpretation

    • Lower packed down floor surface overlying bedrock in room 33, associated with two small hearth features 695, 696 . Or deliberate construction of beaten-earth floor.

    • Although there is one fragment of glazed Syrian ware of the 13th c., this may be an intrusion -- since the other 176 sherds collected from this later all provide a 10th-11th c. date. Coins include locally minted coin of Basil II and Constantine VIII (1016-1025), two locally minted coins of Basil I (867-886), one coin possibly of Justinianic date
