Description

  • CH06SR0896
  • Loose dark brown ashy fill in SE area 3, courtyard
  • Loose dark brown soil with small stones. The extent was approximately 1.3 M (NW-SE) X 1.2 M (NE-SW). Context has several smithing hearths recovered and there was a lense of black ashy soil (not more than 3-4 cm in depth) of the same consistency of the dark brown soil.
  • Two documentation photos from PMP 66. Extends into area of courtyard excavated in 2005. Several medium-sized stones on eastern edge of context, however not articulated or in any recognizable pattern.
  • 12 - 13th c. Ceramics.

Interpretation

    • Fill possibly associated with metalworking activities. - Shape of pit is oddly suggestive of 6th - 7th c. Pits in bedrock, with conjoined square and circle, but stratigraphy and pottery speak for a late date.
