  • Layer of medium - large stones, large quantity of tile fragments in matrix of brown soil. Covers entire area of room 32. Several pieces of modern material, ceramics of a mixed date, apparently typical of wall collapses. Earlier material in fabric of walls. Area of small charcoal flecks near southern stairs.
  • Rubble in western door between room 32 and 29 removed as part of this layer. Worked in area to the northeast, some small areas of 2.5YR 4/4 reddish brown in northeast corner (this area assigned context number 346). Charcoal sample taken from south portion of unit. -- Notes from July 2005: the relationship between this layer and 346 is confused and stratigraphic relationship between the two layers, as reported in 2004, is unreliable; original sheet had 338 covering 346, but that relationship has now been deleted
  • modern iron; tenth to thirteenth century ceramics

Interpretation

    • collapse - possibly disturbed by modern activity
      • CS
    • this layer will be considered modern for phasing purposes, although its initial formation probably dates to the 13th or 14th century
