  • CH04SR0352
  • ashy charcoal-filled layer in room 28
  • Possible burnt layer. Large charcoal inclusions and carbonized wood found in very dark ashy soil -- seems to cover clay skim/surface SR353
  • Other Finds - Samples taken from 11 pieces of wood - burnt beams possibly for construction - wood planed and squared NB (July 19, 2005): although the wood sampled was recorded in the GIS and was supposed to be labelled accordingly, some of it is likely to have become detached from its contextual associations and documentation

Interpretation

    • Burnt wooden beams indicate likelyhood of rafters burning and collapsing in this room - tile content in same context backs this up.
      • SW
    • July 19, 2005: tile content light compared to other rooms that seem to have had roofs, but the fragility of the bedrock basin and the roofing requirement of smithing probably indicate that the room was at least partially covered with a wooden or thatch roof
