  • CH05SR0587
  • Black soil/fill of a pit underneath context 576 in W courtyard
  • Very black organic silty loam approximately 1 M (N/S) X 90 cm (E/W) and 10 cm in depth with a moderate amount of metal recovered. Filled lower part and composed the majority of cut 588, which cut 2 adjacent contexts (577 and 578) and a lower surface (550) and rested on bedrock.
  • After cleaning the profile it appears that context 587 is connected/associated with context 524. The preliminary datable ceramics list only 2 fragments from the XIII-XIV centuries.

Interpretation

    • Fill associated with metal working activities and the lower of two fills filling the cut context 588. Possibly a hearth, but bedrock didn’t show signs of burning?
