Description

  • CH06SR0606
  • Compact clayish surface in NW part of room 38
  • Layer of compact, clayish soil. This was fairly well compacted and was not terribly well delineated in the area opposite Cut 601. The soil contained a lot of ceramic and bone, with just a few pieces of glass and metal. There was an abundance of sea stones and sea shells.
  • The only doubts might spring from the fact that this layer seemed artifically compacted (not a use surface) perhaps from our use of it in this year's work, and Italo in last year's work. So, this layer, in some areas, did not seem ultimately distinguishable from the layer beneath, context 827.
  •

Interpretation

    • This appears to be a well-compact layer of fill surrounding Cut 601. The compactness might be a result of our walking on it, or the archaeologists last summer using it for their excavation of Cut 601. There was a lot of debris in this layer, especially large ceramics, sea stones and seashells. Perhaps this layer of fill was taken from closer to the seaside, rather than the construction debris we were finding in Cut 728.
