  • Cut of pit in western side of room 38
  • Cut for a pit within the greater cut 900 in the NW part of the room. The cut is made up of squared edges on the SW side and semicircular edges on the NE. Along the SE edge there is a square shaped entrance (width 0,58 m; length 0.90 m) perpendicular to the edge of the pit. The overall dimensions of the pit are 2.23 m x 1.04 m. This pit was discovered last season and, though it was thought to be completely excavated, there was yet one more layer before it was complete.
  • There is some doubt about the bottom layers of this pit, but not the pit itself.

Interpretation

    • This pit was discovered and nearly completely excavated by Italo in the 2005 season. The layer that was last completed in 2005 was 668. When we began work back in this area, there was some material left in this context so we reopened that layer. However, when we began working in it again, we found another small layer of material that continued along the inside of the pit's cut (this is context 868). This was the last, though, and the pit was complete. It appears, at this point, to be a cut for some basement-domestic purposes for the 13th century home above it. Its fill is totally different from the areas around it in cut 900 and thus, even though filled in the same century as the areas around it, its filling was a separate action.
