Micro View Forms

Description

  • CH06SR0831
  • Layer of loose yellow metallurgical byproduct (?), Room 38, NE Section
  • Layer of extremely distinct yellow soil, with patches of darker orange material and charcoal in cut 900. There were almost no finds in this layer - a few pieces of pottery and a couple of bones that could have been picked up from the layer beneath. The material was odorless and soft (after troweling), with no metal finds. The surface that it formed was uniform but uneven (not level).
  • This layer was remarkable in many ways - the colors, the compactness of the soil, the delineation of materials (through color and texture) and the absolute lack of finds - no real amount of ceramic or metals. When taking it off, I noticed that the orange material that outlined the yellow material when the layer was intact in fact formed the bottom (even if thin at points) of the layer. Immediately beneath this layer was yet another very distinct layer and so the stratigraphic reliabilty is excellent.

Interpretation

    • Although the material looks much like clay, the orange material and charcoal mixed in lends credence to the idea that this material is in some way metallurgical (if not purely sulfur, or sulfur byproduct). Further analysis will have to be done before any conclusions can be tenable.
