Description

  • CH06SR0754
  • Light gray ashy soil with stones in SE part of room 38
  • This layer consisted of very ashy, gray soil filled with many stones, rock, ceramic and metal fragments. The earth was fairly well compacted, and easily distinguished from the layer beneath. This layer also contained many seashells and was much less deep than 712 (the layer directly covering it).
  • There was doubt, initially, concerning whether this layer covered or was covered by 753 - In one attempt to figure this out we "troweled around" a bit and may have slightly contaminated the intersection of 754 and 753. It is still not clear, though, that this layer was closed properly as it seems to continue into context 758.
  • Numismatic finds - datable to Bail I and other Byzantine emperorships in the 9-10th centuries

Interpretation

    • This layer appears to have been yet another fill layer in cut 728. The color was very grey and easliy distinguished from both the layer covering and the layer it covered. This layer also had an unusually large number of rocks (large) and seashells throughout. There were 11 nails mapped, but very little charcoal remains.
