Description

  • CH06SR0712
  • Layer of loose brown soil with stones in SE part of room 38
  • Layer of light brown soil - with large amount of bone, pottery fragments, seashells, and rocky inclusions.
  • This layer was begun during the 2005 season so it has rested under backfill for a year. Additionally, just shortly after it was uncovered from the backfill the area expereinced two days of periodic heavy rain. This left standing water in some of the lower sections (E and W corners). This may have affected interpretation of soil color, etc.
  • Bronze Coin (#3408) appears to be datable to Byzantine Emperor Basil I (r.867-886); Glass bracelet fragment (#3392) and pottery are datable to Constantinople productions of 9-10c.

Interpretation

    • This layer appears to be a filling of the larger cut, CH05 728. As it falls below the floor level of the room as built (clear by evidence on E wall), it appears to be fill for the purpose of building the greater structure.
