  • Ash scatter in E corner of room 33 connected with hearth bottom
  • Ash patch (appx. 1.6 x 1.6 m) Ash patch contains high density of slag and iron bits. Ashiest portion seems to have been limited to the east corner, with a noticeably higher concentration of slag 1.2m from the east wall. Deposit seems to have built up into the corner and sits on a bump. Soil was a fine silt loam with charcoal inclusions.
  • trowel cleaned to trace or reveal any interfaces or discrete formations. Once feature was identified context was changed to 555 to further isolate material.

Interpretation

    • Material protruding through the final phase floor, context 451, consisting of Iron and Ash stains in a discrete concentration in the east corner of the room. Slag and bits of iron visible in floor stains suggesting the debris of iron working. Context is the spread of this debris above the hearth feature. Once the context was cleaned, a smaller, more discrete pit feature was isolated.
