  • Dark gray ashy fine silt loam. Covering approximately two-thirds of Area 3 it is only ~ 5-8 cm in depth.
  • Sample of charcoal- 642, This context covers the majority of Area 3 and there is debate whether it is equal to 0752, therefore covering the entire surface of the courtyard [including last year's excavations]. Only small amounts of tile. [Documentation] Photos available from PMP 54.

Interpretation

    • Ashy layer associated with metalworking activities across Area 3 of the coutyard. This context may have been the final use phase of the courtyard and though the fine ashy soil is from metalworking activity, the surface and relatively thin depth is the result of light use (ie trampling), possibly after metalworking had ceased.
