Description

  • CH06SR0782
  • Soft brown loam in NW courtyard
  • A soft brown loam with very few orange clay inclusions. Consistency was full of chunks of bedrock and other small stones. The dimensions of this context are 1.7 M (NE-SW) X 60 cm (N-W-SE) and approximately 5-7 cm in depth. This context covered small bits of what was left of context 0788, but it also seemed to cover areas of bedrock where 0788 was absent (0782 had similar characteristics in Area 2).
  • Compared to previous layers there were [far] fewer ceramics and bone. Proportionately there was more plaster. Nail found in very bottom of context. Very little tile at all. Uncertain whether 0782 was over 0845? No, it is under 0845. Ceramics suggest that 845 is earlier than 782; they also suggest that some part of 782 was contaminated by Middle Byzantine activity, since 772 seems Early Byz but is above 782 - intrusion with construction of well?
