Description

  • CH05SR0519
  • Lower/earlier floor level below 451 in room 33
  • Hard packed floor surface, defined by sherds on horizontal orientation. Soil is a fine silt-loam Hue 10YR 6/1 with ash patch in the NW. Complex fill level comprising of several dumps of discrete material, voids, inclusions: articulated plaster, walling stones, brick, very high amounts of bone, ceramic and tile.
  • Context was initially identified as a surface below context 451. Discerning a clear stratigraphic break between the cuts for the ash pits, and the hearth feature posed a perplexing problem. Upon excavation, the entire level appeared to be a single filling event. Sediments were removed by big-pick for expediency, and in arbitrary passes aimed at identifing interfaces.

Interpretation

    • Earlier occupation phase floor surface, defined by discrete stratigraphy, soil color, and sherds on horizontal orientation. Context 451 'peeled' off to reveal this surface. Context 519 has proved to be a fill level, representing a single filling event. The fill spreads across the surface of the room in an undulating fashion. In several areas, concentrations of rocks, and clayier soil were identified, but upon excavation revealed the same filling material that characterizes the layer, representing dumps of different material. A ramp, identified by harder packed material was identified, and was more than likely the product of the levelers entering and exiting the room as it was being filled. The fill is characterized by an inordinate amount of faunal, ceramic and tile material. Interestingly, metal finds are sparse. The laver is further characterized by sherds, tile, and bone on edge through out the area of the fill. Upper levels of the fill, probably represent a discrete, packed down surface associated with the metallurgical installations/hearth features

    • Ceramic material has a broad spread, with a large amount of residual pottery from the 5th-6th c. forward; amphorae and glazed pottery, however, seem clearly to suggest a date in the 13th c. Coins include one locally-minted of time of Justinian, one locally minted of time of Romanus IV (1067-1071), one locally minted of time of Constantine VII (second quarter of 10th c.), one Roman of Constantine II, one locally minted of time of Romanus III (1028-1034), one of Basil and Constantine (976-1025), one Byzantine of early 6th c.
